摘要

This is Flower Noble, the new Senior Editor of the Journal of Progressive Human Services: Radical Thought and Praxis. I have recently taken over Marcia Cohen's role as Senior Editor due to her well deserved retirement. I am writing to introduce myself and this Notes from the Field section, which I have been attempting to cultivate for several years. Some of you may know that my primary occupation is direct care social worker, not faculty member. Over the years that I have been a member of the Journal's Editorial Collective, I have often wished to see articles by service recipients, activists, and radical human services practitioners. Recently we have begun receiving more of these submissions, so I hope that you enjoy this Notes from the Field section, and consider writing your own. If you are an academic, consider pairing up to write an article with a service recipient, activist, or practitioner who is making a difference in a way that would benefit our readership. Consider helping to write a simple "how to" guide for creating radical policy changes. I would love to see radical practitioners (or, ethical practitioners who are seen as outliers by their colleagues) embrace the contradiction of human services: That even when we fight for equality and against oppression, the act of providing services is often actually creating an oppressive hierarchy and furthering inequality. We see this with white activists labeling themselves as allies in the Black Lives Matter movement, when rank and file case workers use their relative authority to help their clients access basic income and health care, and when therapists diagnose clients with mental health disorders so that they can provide treatment.
