I anticipated this would be a little book about a little line where little happened. In fact it starts with the involvement of Kendal in determining the route of the West Coast Main Line (where a map of the larger area would have been useful), and it goes into great detail about the manoeuvres to set up the railway to Windermere. Every working detail, including serial timetable changes, are noted both before and after the inevitable takeover by the LNWR. The author concedes a less eventful history after the loss of independence, but workings and physical changes are all fully recorded. Later in the century the change of atmosphere, where big companies were now predominant, led to the rejection by Parliament of a new line to Ambleside.
