For their original sources transport historians usually look to minute books of railway, canal and other companies and to other official papers and more technical documents associated with those companies. Less often do they trawl the files of local newspapers and periodicals; yet I have found these of enormous value in my researches, not just in transport history, usually in Doncaster and district, but also in music and sport, even, though less often, military history and literature, all of which are, in greater or less degree, interests of my own, about which I have written, sometimes about two or more together.
