摘要

The Bridgwater Canal Company was one of the most innovative and successful inland waterways in Great Britain. The origin and history of the Duke of Bridgwater, his canal (1761) and its principal engineer, James Brindley (1716-1772) have been well recorded.1 Although the Duke and his successors during the 19th century made attempts to replace horses by steam powered-tugs, it took a major epidemic of horse disease in 1872-74 to precipitate their partial replacement in 1874 by five steam tugs. This was followed by the acquisition of a further 21 tugs over the next seven years.2 This article will review the nature and diagnosis of the horse disease and briefly the requirements and source of the replacement steam tugs.
