As outlined in the book's first three chapters, and contrary to conventional wisdom, church attendance (and the number of unique congregations) in the United States over the past 20 years has increased across 49 of our 50 states. Only North Dakota has seen an absolute decline. That said, the distributional affiliation of formal church members has shifted markedly, with large declines in mainline Protestant denominations, offset by substantive growth amongst Evangelical and immigrant Catholic groupings. This transition creates enormous dislocations in space markets, as worship facilities often require significant investment to reconfigure toward alternative uses. This book provides a well-written, nicely researched and documented introduction into this process. The authors analyze, categorize, and summarize the determinants of adaptive re-use outcomes for 82 known, completed projects. Equally, if not more important, the authors note these trends are continuing, and specifically note (as of the book's writing) 1,372 religious buildings and 232 former schools were actively for sale, and thus potential targets, or opportunities, for adaptive reuse.
