This book deals with the interesting topic of shrinking cities and urban growth-a very relevant topic, but most often tackled at the case-study level. Many stories have been shared about East German cities, such as Leipzig and Dresden, or American cities like Detroit. Often, the focus is on city blocks or neighborhoods. In this volume, the editors, Robin Ganser and Rocky Piro, use as a starting point the parallel occurrences of urban growth and decline, not only at the central city level but also at the city region level, including the urban fringe and surrounding rural areas. The aim is to analyze the spatial consequences of decline, together with related planning theories, from an international perspective, in order to further develop planning concepts and tools. As the editors phrase it: "In this context, sustainable planning approaches for either growth or decline are pursued with a view to strengthen social, economic, and environmental resilience, while bolstering the capacity to address adverse challenges" (p. 3).
