摘要

The title captures exactly what the book is about: smart growth and its applicability to Chinese urban issues (which are both complex and compelling). China faces unprecedented urban growth over the next 30-40 years, involving a process that accelerated dramatically with market reform starting in the 1980s. The United States, meanwhile, is largely urbanized and has developed its own urbanization model based on its concerns with sprawl and facilitated by the ongoing landscape oppression of the automobile. China has now moved into its own automobile era and is beginning to face many of the challenges that the smart growth model in the United States has tried to mitigate. In Smart Urban Growth for China, editors Yan Song and Chengri Ding use their selections to explore whether American planning techniques falling under the smart growth rubric are relevant for guiding urban development processes in China. Not surprisingly, the answer is mixed, but leaning much more toward the American techniques being applicable and topical.
