摘要

A section of this issue is devoted to responses to the tragic events of Septembern11, 2001. It must surely be obvious to everyone that religion was a majornfactor in the actions taken by the terrorists that day. As a mythologist andnstudent of religion and as one who has hoped that religion can contribute tongeneral psychological health, I am led naturally, in light of September 11, tonwonder whether, in fact, religion might not be more dangerous than redemptive.nIt would be simple enough, of course, to say that the problem lies only innIslam, the religion of the perpetrators of the September 11th events. But evennthe most cursory look at human history—including very recent human history—nwill make it obvious to any objective observer that many religions havenplayed significant roles in the horrendous things that people have done toneach other. One could argue that the so-called monotheistic or Abrahamicnreligions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—have been particularly guiltynof applying exclusionary, and often literal and fundamentalist, interpretationsnof their religions to the justification of activities that are clearly detrimentalnto psychological and/or physical health. Jews, Christians, and Muslimsnhave with some consistency seen their particular approaches each asn“the way” rather than “a way.” They have suppressed and psychologicallynand/or physically mutilated women, abused children, and persecuted peoplenseen for various reasons—skin color, belief, sexual orientation—as the “other,”neven the “other” within their own groups.
