In the mid-1990s, I was managing the Olsson's Bookstore at Dupont Circle in Washington, DC, and I can still vividly recall how after a particularly harrowing customer service experience, one of my clerks stepped away and muttered, mostly to himself but loud enough to be overheard, 'This would be a great place to work if it weren't for the customers.' That idea has been occasionally running through my head since I left the trade world as publisher of Basic Books to become the director of the University of North Carolina Press last summer. As far as I can tell, the scholarly monograph is on life support and under attack on multiple fronts.
