Late winter of 2013 finds snow drifts bordering swatches of green winter wheat on the rolling hills of the Palouse that surround Washington State University. The land offers the promise of spring, and its anticipation is both a distraction and an inspiration to those of us at WSU Press, reminding us of our commitment to the history, culture, and environment of our region, and the preservation of that legacy in our publications. Like our peers in scholarly publishing, we have passed through a most demanding season in publishing, and the portent of change is welcome. Indeed, the dramatic changes in publishing over the past decade, whether in technology or the marketplace, have challenged us all. At WSU Press our editorial program-focusing on the American West, particularly the history, politics, and culture of the Pacific Northwest-has been our bulwark in this tempest.
