Records management within the museums and galleries sector has not previously been considered in a text book of the kind Charlotte Brunskill and Sarah Demb have written, which makes the publication of Records Management for Museums and Galleries particularly noteworthy. Sarah Demb has contributed to the only other reference work to address records management within this sector, the useful Museum Archives: An Introduction, published in 2004 by the Society of American Archivists. Unlike the book under review, however, Museum Archives predominantly examined archives as a whole, with sections on records management and records surveys by Deborah Wythe and Paula Stewart, respectively, located within other chapters covering all of the areas pertinent to archives and their management in a museum environment. Although this earlier book provides valuable advice for the UK museum or gallery records manager, this is significantly limited because it focuses on American museums but also has only one chapter which explicitly deals with records management. As Charlotte Brunskill and Sarah Demb point out, Records Management for Museums and Galleries seeks to address this gap in the literature.
