On 25 May 2008, the Mars Phoenix Lander made the first successful powered landing on Mars since the Viking landings three decades earlier. This successful landing completed a long and troubled 10-year journey to the Red Planet for Phoenix. Phoenix landed in the northern arctic plains of Mars (see Fig. 1). Its science objective was to study the history of water and habitability potential in the Martian arctic's ice-rich soil.
