Present work is an attempt to improve the speed of a specific process currently done manually in 5-Axis CNC Honeycomb Milling Machine Laboratory in Structures Group. The specific process under discussion is Vacuum Clamping Layout (VCL) which requires finding an optimum solution given a number of variables, values of which are restricted in a certain well defined way. These variables include movement of deck as a whole and individual riser block movement. This manual process is automated by use of python coding involving a lot of rigorous algorithms. Coding consists of a number of outer and inner loops associated with the various values that the variables can have. Finally, optimum solution is found after checking for every possible outcome. Input for the Automated Vacuum Clamping Layout (AVCL) software contains details of machining elements like holes, cut-outs and profile. The AVCL also features an additional tool for generating AutoLISP Codes to be run in AutoCAD. These AutoLISP codes generates the drawing of component to be machined in more customized fashion which is very specific to the Lab. This custom made drawing has high readability by the user in the lab, when compared with the original drawing received by the lab. Hence, even manual VCL and checking is made a lot easier and hence faster. Altogether, AVCL has high potential to be a versatile tool to any machining place where vacuum clamping and AutoCAD drawings are used.
