NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation)/IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) is a regional navigation satellite system being developed by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for providing position, velocity and timing information to its users in its service area. Ionospheric error correction for single frequency (L5) users of IRNSS is provided through a set of eight ionospheric coefficients broadcasted in the IRNSS navigation signal. These coefficients are being estimated on the ground using the regional IRNSS ionospheric data using indigenously developed technique. As the model used for the estimation of ionospheric coefficients was originally designed for global basis of ionosphere error correction, it provides about 50-60% RMS of error removal along the user's line-of-sight over Indian region. Further some parameters in the model are constantly fixed to suit the global ionosphere behaviour. Since the scope of utilization of the ionospheric model is restricted to the IRNSS service area, these constants can be tuned or computed to reflect the exact ionospheric behaviour over Indian region. In this paper, two fixed parameters in the coefficient based ionosphere model namely, A1 (constant night time delay) and A4 limit (period of diurnal ionosphere delay variation) are refined using three novel and innovative methods for performance enhancement over Indian region. The developed new models are first investigated using GAGAN (GPS Aided and GEO Augmented Navigation) ionospheric data and then validated using IRNSS ionospheric data. Based on the exhaustive empirical analysis using real measurements from GAGAN as well as IRNSS data, it was found that uniformly all the three innovative models designed provide about 65-75% of ionospheric error removal along the user's line of sight as against 50-60% error correction with the existing model in use, thereby enhancing single frequency user position accuracies of IRNSS.
