摘要

The tetrachoric correlation is a product-moment correlation between two bivariate normal variables that each have been measured on a dichotomous scale. For instance, a quantitative genotype might be expressed as a dichotomous phenotype; amount of knowledge of a specific topic might be measured by a test item that is scored correct/incorrect; or a survey question that is of a sensitive nature (e.g. income, alcohol consumption, body weight, etc.) might ask the respondent to simply check one of two categories (e.g. less than $40,000, at least $40,000). The underlying quantitative variable can be latent (unobservable), such as genotype or knowledge, and observable only on a dichotomous scale. Alternatively, the underlying quantitative variable can be observable, such as income, and measured on a dichotomous scale for convenience or other reasons.
