The writers are pleased about the discussers' attention to our paper and would like to use this opportunity to clarify several issues. Both the writers and the discussers appear to be in good agreement in recognizing the stiffness of the confinement elements and made individual attempts to develop more efficient details. The writers would like to reiterate their views on confinement (Xiao et al. 1991; Xiao and Wu 2000). We believe that there are two most important issues involved in confinement design for a concrete column, i.e., the confining stiffness and the confining strength or limit of the confinement elements, such as tubes, hoops, etc. Actually, the main focus of the paper was on confining strength. The writers proposed a limit design procedure to design the confinement elements based on the required confining pressure derived from the seismic design specification of the current ACI 318 code. The writers would like to comment on the following three issues raised by the discussers.
