The ultimate goal of cloud computing is to provide unparalleled flexibility where the user can have any resource at any time, in any volume, with strong security and tailored service level agreements (SLAs). Software and hardware resources are provisioned on demand and in minimum time. The customer pays per use in a utility-like model, with no upfront licence cost or annual maintenance. One of the key enablers often overlooked to support this nirvana of carefree information technology is billing. The ability to utilise billing as a competitive advantage can be an important differentiator and a prerequisite for success in the fast-evolving and highly competitive cloud market. But what are the cloud billing issues and what should an enterprise be looking for from a cloud computing provider? What billing criteria may the provider need to consider in infrastructure as a service (laaS), platform as a service (PaaS) or software as a service (SaaS)?
