摘要

We start our latest issue of Journal of Telecommunications Management with a welcome contribution from Daniel Kurgan, CEO at BICS-the joint venture between Belgacom, Swisscom and MTN. Daniel considers the challenges and opportunities facing carriers in the international wholesale carrier market. The challenges are considerable and include the increasing commoditisation of the market; fierce competition; regulatory initiatives; and the costs of introducing IP technology into wholesale carriers' networks. He prescribes a threefold remedy: pursuing consolidation to achieve the scale needed to enable greater bargaining power and the necessary investments; taking an active role in the various IP initiatives and thereby preparing for the migration of voice onto (mobile) data exchange; and diversifying sources of revenue towards new services with higher added value.
