Nano-TiO_2 coated cotton fabrics with temperature regulating properties

摘要

NIR reflecting colored fabrics are a new field in designing functional textiles, that gives fabrics cooling performance when exposure to sunlight and have applications in cool cloths, canopies and awnings, sunshades for automobiles and houses and many newer applications. Accordingly, current work reports a cool coating designed, to regulate back surface temperature of cotton fabrics while exposure to the sun light by preventing absorption of VIS and NIR portion of sun light and resultant thermal heating. In order to accomplish this goal, at first step, white and colored cotton fabrics were coated with TiO2 nanopigments with various diameters and concentration. At further step, NIR reflectivity of coated fabrics were measured using VIS-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrophotometric methods and based on standard test method ASTM G 107-03, and thermal heat build-up of the fabrics were measured using heat-box designed based on ASTM D 4803-97 standard test method. Obtained results revealed that, TiO2 nanopigments can enhance VIS and NIR reflectance of white and colored fabrics, which cause fabrics to represent different color appearance and spectral/thermal performance, where, TiO2 size and concentration are two key affecting parameters.
