Global sourcing of South Korean apparel industry: sourcing trend and supplier selection

摘要

This study aims to analyze the global sourcing strategy of the South Korean apparel industry. A sourcing portfolio was constructed to investigate global sourcing trends by company and product characteristics and supplier countries. Additionally, considerations of supplier selection and advantages/disadvantages of supplier countries in terms of trade partners were investigated. Data were collected through trade paper reviews. The results indicated that recent global sourcing trends in the South Korean apparel industry were characterized by diversification and growth in number of supplier countries. Regarding company characteristics and supplier countries, sourcing trends differed little, while there was some difference based on product characteristics. In addition, almost considerations of supplier country selection addressed in previous studies were also appeared in this study. But, there were also additional considerations specific to the South Korean apparel industry. Advantages/disadvantages of supplier countries were also investigated, most of which were related to environmental factors. Finally, implications to acquire core competences are suggested.
