Effect of dynamic loading on pore size of needlepunched nonwoven geotextiles

Nonwoven geotextiles are widely employed in civil engineering applications for the functions of separation, filtration, drainage and protection. These functions are highly dependent upon pore size as it is one of their major requirements and it becomes more critical when geotextile is subjected to a compressional load. In this study, the effect of loading cycles on the compressional characteristics has been investigated by two parameters, i.e. compressional (α) and recovery (β) (Kothari and Das, 1992, 1994). The effect of process parameters, i.e. feed rate, depth of needle penetration and stroke frequency on the pore size has also been reported. Furthermore, the relationship between fabric area density and pore size has been discussed.
