An asymptotic solution is found by the method of inner and outer approximations for the singularly perturbed equations governing the deformation of twines and fibres that are under tension where the angles at the boundaries are fixed. This solutions is shown to be accurate to O(ε~2) where ε~2 = EI/l~2f, EI is the bending stiffness, f is the magnitude of the applied tension and l is the twine length. The weighted-ring stiffness test is also re-examined in the light of these results and a comparison made with the approximation used by Peirce (1930).
