Influence of Yarn Structural Parameters on Rotor-spun Yarn Properties

Rotor-spinning is a commonly used spinning process, and population-wise, it is second only to ring-spinning. Rotor-spun yarn is known to have a two-part structure, consisting of a central core which resembles ring-spun yarn, and an outer sheath containing a random disarray of fibres and wrappers. Louis (1981) has observed that the wrapper fibres influence the yarn tensile properties. Though the yarn is imparted with real twist due to its complex structure, the exact measurement of twist in the yarn by conventional twist testing methods is difficult. It was observed by Audivert (1988) and by Barella (1986) that there is a difference between the measured twist and machine twist. The deviation increases with changes in various factors such as machine twist and yarn linear density. Unlike ring-spun yarn, measured twist of rotor-spun yarn has negligible influence on yarn properties (Barella et al., 1985). The rotor yarn surface structure has been classified in different categories by Lawrence and Finikopulos (1992), Schutz et al. (1978), and Naik and Lopez (1983). In daily practice, it is very difficult to classify the wrappers in different classes and count them one by one. In this study, an attempt is made to find out the influence of various structural parameters that can be easily measured on the tensile properties of rotor-spun yarn.
