Smart Blending: a Means to Obtain Fibers and Plastic Products with Tailored Properties

Blending technology of the past century was developed primarily to forcibly melt and mix polymers and additives. As in any composite material, the properties of blends are strongly influenced by the shape, size, and orientation of each component. Desired shapes in minor component bodies or additive distributions are now altered by time-consuming iteration guided largely by insight and experience. Examples are presented which demonstrate that new and commercially significant morphologies can be produced by more controllable blending methods that may serve as the basis for new blending technologies. Greater attention to processing opportunities upstream of spinnerets, for example, can yield spun fibers with useful microstructures or nanostructures, such as those containing abundant internal fibrils, multilayer films, interpenetrating morphologies, and percolating networks, as well as more flexible manufacturing.
