摘要

As water management studies have expanded from a field-scale focus on irrigated croplands to basin-scale assessments of the full spectrum of water resource issues (Anderson et al., 2012), the need for accurate measurement of the consumptive use of water at multiple spatial and temporal scales has become increasingly important. Armed with the advanced capabilities and widespread use of GIS, water resource managers can usefully integrate vast quantities of digital data into water rights regulation, interstate/interbasin compacts, hydrologic modeling, and land management decisions. Rising to meet the challenges of these needs and capabilities, research has recognized remote sensing as a valuable tool for the rapid, cost-effective acquisition of accurate information on evapotranspiration (ET) from natural and managed surfaces over large areas. This special collection features the application of and new research on the use of remotely sensed data, particularly from satellite-based systems, to assess ET in managing water resources.
