摘要

We thank the writers for their thoughtful contribution and constructive criticisms. We agree that stream habitats are complex and that assessment of habitat quality is fraught with difficulty. The main purpose of our paper was to critique the CEAP emphasis on assessing the water quality effects of agricultural conservation measures at the expense of a broader look at ecological effects (i.e., fishes, instream habitat, geo-morphology, and so forth). In our paper (Shields et al., 2006) we also recommend that a partial remedy might be effected by increasing emphasis in the existing CEAP modeling effort on developing some rudimentary coarse scale habitat variables known to influence habitat quality in lotic ecosystems.
