The authors of this paper have provided a valuable analysis of the stream buffer question by combining field data on stream temperature, geographic information system technology, modeling, and low flow analysis to provide information that strikes a balance between excessively demanding theoretical models and broad generalizations from localized case studies. They should be commended for their creativity and recognition of managers' needs. The State of Alaska has been in the process of reviewing its riparian zone standards for its forest practices act (The Alaska Forest Resources and Practices Act - Alaska Statute 41.17). As a participant in this effort, I found the sensitivity analysis presented in Table 5 of this paper potentially useful in our context of limited field studies in each of three large forested regions (southeast Alaska, south central Alaska, and interior Alaska). However, I have three concerns regarding the results expressed in Table 5 and as summarized in the text: (1) the sensitivity to buffer width, (2) the rationale for the negative absolute sensitivity to "bank/canopy distance" (BC), and (3) the appropriateness of using a 0-meter buffer-width as the reference value in testing the sensitivity of all parameters other than buffer width itself.
