Among the different factors that influence the skeletal muscle properties and atrophic state are contractile activity and muscle neural supply. Accordingly the effects of denervation and immobilization have been studied on the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscle of the hindlimb of the jerboa (Jaculus jaculus). Muscle weight, total fiber number, number of different fiber types and fiber diameters of the two muscles were measured. The EDL and soleus muscles of denervated and immobilized animals were compared with those of controls. Both denervated EDL and soleus muscles showed more reduction in weight compared with immobilized muscles and controls. Following denervation, the reduction in the diameters of type ⅡB fibers in the EDL was more than that of type HA fibers, which indicated that type ⅡB fibers are in greater need of neural control than type ⅡA fibers. The degree of atrophy in type ⅡA and ⅡB fibers was more extensive after denervation than after immobilization. Type Ⅰ fibers comprising the soleus muscle were also significantly reduced in diameter after denervation. Similarly, type Ⅰ fibers in the soleus muscle were reduced in diameter more after denervation than after immobilization. The above results demonstrated that both neural innervation and activity influence jerboa muscle growth and differentiation. It is proposed that Jaculus jaculus is a good animal model system for studying the effects of activity or lack of activity on mammalian skeletal muscle.
