摘要

In one Kuwaiti residential housing project, a problem of upheaval and severe cracking of the roofing and exterior yard tiles appeared just after completion of the project. Many of the affected tiles were repaired and replaced, but the problem kept occurring. A visual survey was conducted, and sample roofing materials were collected for testing and analysis. Tests were carried out to evaluate the materials used in the roofing system. Use of inferior materials and poor workmanship were the main causes of the problem. Sulphate attack played a major role in contributing to the problem. The sulphate attack was enhanced by the presence of moisture and high temperature leading to expansion of the roofing layers. This movement of the roofing layer was restrained by the improper installation of the expansion joints.
