Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions-everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses. (Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, Satura X (77-81), 1st or 2nd century CE)rnAs indicated on the cover, Total Landscape, Theme Parks, Public Space boldly targets what the author has labelled 'PROPASt-PRivately Owned Publicly Accessible Space in a themed mode-a hybrid form of public space emerging in urban environments worldwide'. Backed up by a myriad references to a host of contemporary philosophers, the author explores the notion of 'production' of space in today's capitalist society and argues why the resulting 'commodity' is no longer the collective and objective stage, the common denominator so to say, it pretends to emulate. Although the author's somewhat polemic tone of voice all but resurrects the gloomy image of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and for that reason may be a turn off to some readers, the point so passionately made is a disconcertingly valid one.
