It is tempting to brush off the Belfast municipality's embrace of the Titanic narrative as a post-conflict reimaging strategy. Indeed, the Titanic brand alongside its spatial manifestations - the Titanic Belfast museum and the Titanic Quarter - draw scorn from most academics writing on both urban development and socio-political issues in Belfast. Such scholars commonly dismiss these developments as financially and symbolically misguided in a city faced with pressing problems of segregation, ethnic tension and increasing socio-economic disparity. 'Relaunching Titanic' is an attempt to hold a more sustained dialogue about the project beyond dismissal and derision. The discussion is fittingly led by William J.V. Neill, a planning scholar who has published on identity, representation and branding in Belfast for over two decades. In addition to co-authoring the introduction with co-editors Michael Murray and Berna Grist, Neill contributes two chapters to the book (versions of which have already been published elsewhere). The volume features seven further contributions from authors from an advantageously diverse range of disciplinary and professional backgrounds. Rather than summarising each chapter in turn, this review highlights the volume's main contributions and some of its most provocative points.
