The world is urbanising rapidly, delivering growth and seeking models to ensure urban development is sustainable. Urbanised countries in the world are facing a considerable need to deliver new homes nearer places of work. One of the most influential development templates in recent history is that of the 'Garden City'. Proposed by Ebenezer Howard over a century ago and recently advanced by Sir Peter Hall and Colin Ward as 'Sociable Cities', the number of satellite settlements and urban extensions is growing quickly around the world. The question is therefore 'to what extent does this represent an appropriate response to delivering growth in the 21st Century and how should it be advanced?' This Special Issue would acknowledge the contribution of Sir Peter Hall by recognising and advancing his work on 'Sociable Cities'. In doing so it would place his concept into context and consider four key challenges associated with planning and implementation: housing, land, infrastructure and institutional frameworks. This issue would seek to identify the challenges and discuss the approaches and strategies to address them.
