摘要

Professor Sir Peter Hall, geographer and town planner, died on 30th July, 2014, aged 82. He was Professor of Planning and Regeneration at The Bartlett, University College London, President of the Regional Studies Association and President of the Town and Country Planning Association, services to which he was knighted for in 1998. Over a career of more than half a century, he developed an early understanding of the role of urban planning in society and the contribution of the social ideals of the Garden City movement, interest in which has recently been reignited within government. His many texts and articles have been required reading for any student of urban geography, planning and regeneration for the last half a century and will continue to live on, informing and stimulating students of urban issues and planning and regeneration philosophies. Among his around 50 books and edited texts, seminal contributions include 'The world cities', 'Cities of tomorrow', 'Sociable cities', 'Cities in civilization' and 'Good cities, better lives'. These examine planning in theory and practice, as well as the social and economic problems and opportunities that led to the evolution and development of planning and regeneration. He particularly drew upon international examples, particularly from the great European cities, and provided accessible and inspirational analysis for students, academics and practitioners. His involvement in government urban policy and planning over several decades included the thinking behind the original Enterprise Zones of the 1980s, being a member of the influential Urban Task Force of the late 1990s and, more recently, through offering advice on national housing and transport infrastructure planning policy. Professor Sir Peter Hall was an editorial board member of the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal from its first issue in 2007, writing the first editorial for the Journal, in which he argued that it was the first academic-professional outlet providing a home for academic research and professional in-depth investigation into regeneration questions. He had remained an active board member and was supportive of the Journal. His most recent editorial reminisced on the reintroduction of Enterprise Zones, in which he wrote that they 'allegedly began with this author - a parentage he regretfully denied'.
