We urbanists return again and again to address the fundamental question posed by Sir Peter Hall in Book One of Cities in Civilisation; 'exactly what is the nature of the creative spark that rekindles the urban fires?' The simple answer is of course wealth creation and this has doubtless underpinned the huge surge in urbanisation in recent decades driven by global financial speculation. But this is not all nor is it sufficient to ensure a durable settlement as the contributions to this special issue of the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal make clear. In their different ways they contribute to the continuum of intellectual urbanism that enlightens and inspires all who seek to ensure our cities are not only money making motors, engines of enterprise and crucibles of creativity and cultural and scientific advancement; but also places of beauty, of inclusion and healing, of healthy lifestyles and of safe, comfortable and convenient housing for all.
