Here we address the major concerns with our article published in JVGR (Palladino et al., 2008), which arose from the comments of Allen et al. (2009-this volume). Our study focussed on distinctive plate-pumice-bearing pyroclastic deposits exposed in western Kos (eastern Aegean Volcanic Arc, Greece), which we correlated to an early phase of the major 161 ka Kos Plateau Tuff (KPT) eruption. According to Allen et al. (2009-this volume), who certainly are more familiar than us with Kos stratigraphy, our reference pyroclastic succession in the Kefalos area (in particular stop 4, the type locality for the plate-pumice-bearing deposits) should be instead attributed to a local eruptive centre predating the KPT eruption, thus supporting the previous work (cf. Kefalos tuff ring; Dalabakis and Vougioukalakis, 1993). We did not ignore the previous identification of the study deposits. Indeed, we came to a different stratigraphic interpretation based on the observed vertical and lateral continuity of the study deposits in the Kefalos area with nearby exposures reported as reference sections of KPT in central-western Kos (Allen and Cas, 1998; Allen et al., 1999). Below we discuss key stratigraphic issues and inferred eruptive scenarios and their implications on the mechanism for the origin of plate tube pumice by conduit shear stress proposed by Palladino et al. (2008).
