'Long-awaited classic' may be a reviewer's cliche but it perfectly describes this book. Dominique Cardon is without doubt the world authority on natural dyes. She is highly regarded by all those who have an interest in this colourful field of research. The award-winning French version of this book, Le Monde des Teintures Naturelles, appeared in 2003, and immediately became a standard work, frustratingly inaccessible for non-French speakers. It has been worth the four-year wait for the English version, which is not just a translation but also has an updated and expanded text and illustrations - about 500 of the latter. Although some of the illustrations are regrettably small in scale, the publishers, Archetype Publications, who have an excellent reputation for such works, have again done a great job. The story of natural dyes covers many disciplines. These include archaeology, botany, chemistry, entomology, agriculture, history, economics, social studies, industry and fashion. After introductory chapters discussing various issues concerning 'The Art of Dyeing', Cardon launches into a comprehensive survey of over three hundred plant and animal sources, touching on all these disciplines.
