It all started with the spinning. That was in the 80s and, as I didn't know anyone who kept interesting breeds of sheep, my first fleeces were from the local farm. I didn't know much about wool either and it took some time, and much effort, to realise that the reason I didn't like anything I was producing was that the basic material was rubbish. At the time I was running a smallholding, including buying cade lambs in the market, rearing them on the bottle and putting them in the freezer in the autumn. Sheep improved the quality of grazing for our Dexter cattle but there was a government campaign to eradicate sheep scab, which involved all sheep being dipped in organophosphates (OP) every year, with the local policeman watching to see that it was done properly. As handling fleece with OP residues was bad enough without having to do the dipping, keeping adult sheep was out of the question and we continued with the lamb rearing for several more seasons.
