Kent's Wealden wool houses are a reminder that wool was once a mainstay of the county's -indeed, the country's - economy. Until the fourteenth century, English woollen cloth was rough and homespun and laws to protect the industry forbade the export of wool and the import of finer continental cloth. That created the notorious 'owlers', wool smugglers said to signal to each other by hooting like owls.
