Like a fool I made the comment 'I could talk all day about the history of carding'; but, of all people to make it to, it had to be the Features Editor of The Journal; well trained she immediately pounced 'can you write an article about it then?' So here is my attempt to put on paper what I would normally talk about! (I'll try not to make it last all day!). Oh and I guess I'd better say it's a history of... not a how to! As an historical fibre processor I realise that I have unusual requirements but I hadn't realised what problems and challenges I was setting myself when I started out. I learned to spin with a drop-spindle and to card my wool with hand-cards properly. I bought a pair of carders which had rubber backing for the teeth and a curved wooden back and handle. Then came the day when I wanted something suitable for the mediaeval period - as they should be. I phoned a supplier and asked if they stocked leather backed carders - the answer was 'No! You don't need leather backed carders, the rubber ones work perfectly well!' The result being - if I had to provide my own they would be as accurate as possible and so the research began!
