摘要

No one knows exactly how and when sheep came to the Orkney island of North Ronaldsay, but they were on the island long before the Vikings took control in about 750 AD, and have been an important part of island life all along. As a breed, they represent a very early stage in the evolution of the domestic sheep and are closely related genetically to the prehistoric Palustris. DNA studies have shown the modern Ronnies to have genes very similar indeed to those found in 5,000-year old sheep bones and virtually identical to those in Iron Age sheep bones found throughout Orkney.
