摘要

Two phase α/β sialon ceramics have been prepared by hot pressing and their mechanical, and wear properties have been assessed. The effect of microstructural differences on the mechanical and wear properties of the ceramics was assessed through block on ring and ball on disk type wear experiments under a range of testing conditions. Under mild wear conditions, the higher hardness of the alpha sialon resulted in lower wear than the mixed composite. However, under more severe wear conditions, where the stress fields are high, wear occurred by microcracking of the sample. Under these conditions, the higher fracture toughness and the resistance to the propagation of such cracking afforded by the elongated microstructure of the mixed composites resulted in lower wear.
