The inherent instability, under deformation, of the interface between two materials with dissimilar flow stresses is exploited in the production of composites with structures ranging from laminar to wood-like in texture. Conventional tape-casting is used to give materials with a flow stress controlled only by the binder/plasticiser ratio and the temperature. Repeated deformation of layered materials, by folding and warm-pressing, causes the harder phase to break up into discrete, elongated regions. Composites with a dense ZrO_2 matrix and porous Al_2O_3 inter layers exhibited graceful failure and crack deflection.
