If components are manufactured from compression moulded fibre reinforced material then the flow of the material during the moulding process complicates any analysis as the resultant material properties are not constant throughout the component. This paper presents some of the work carried out in a comparative study of notched plates manufactured from sheet modlding compound (SMC) subjected to a uniaxial tensile load. Two techniques have been used (I) the experimental thermoelastic stress analysis technique based on the SPATE equipment, and (ii) a numerical finite element technique with data from a flow modelling programme.
