Since 1964, alkoxide-derived hydrated aluminas have been commercially available. These alumina hydrates are recovered in the form of boehmite-type powders (ALO(OH)) with a defined grade of crystallinity. In the presence of diluted aqueous monovalent acids, boehmite forms colloidal alumina particles (sols). The particle sizes of the dispersed alumina hydrates can be adjusted in the nanometer range from below 30 to 500 nm. Some properties of these liquid alumina systems (sols), e. g. translucency, charge or particle diameter, are determined by the crystallinity of the starting boehmite alumina powder.
