Recent Technology Incidents in the news, such as identity theft, have shown that the need for information security has never been more pronounced. At the same time, Asia is emerging as an area of the world that is keenly interested in protecting its information, as it moves from production-based economies to ones based on knowledge and information. "More Asian businesses' bread and butter depends on the use and interpretation of information," explains Vincent Yeung, BS 7799 business development manager at BSI Management Systems, Greater China. "In the past decade, enterprises spent a tremendous amount of money in getting the latest technologies to enhance information storage and sharing, while little was focused on information security," says Yeung, pointing out that security measures that existed previ- ously were reactive and seen as a technology issue only. "Nowadays, business transactions rely heavily on information flow. As a result, concerns for confidentiality, integrity and availability of information arise." Given this information flow increase, Asian companies have now changed their tune. Recent issues, such as the news that 85 per cent of China's computers have been infected with a computer virus over the last year, have highlighted weaknesses in the country's information security infrastructure.
