The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestryrnand the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, and thernIndonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), in collaborationrnwith the International Lake Environment Committeern(ILEC), and supported by the government of Bali Provincernand Udayana University, convened the 16th WorldrnLake Conference during 7–11 November 2016. Held inrnBali, Indonesia, the conference theme was ‘Lake EcosystemrnHealth and Its Resilience: Diversity and Risks ofrnExtinction’. Previous World Lake Conferences have beenrnheld in Argentina, China, Denmark, Italy, India, Japan,rnKenya and the USA. They are recognized as attractingrnmulti-sectoral participants, including academia, governments,rncitizens, NGOs and enterprises to exchange theirrnviews and experiences on managing lakes and theirrnbasins for sustainable ecosystem services, and tornenhance collaboration in sustainable lake management.rnTo this end, it is estimated Indonesia has more than 840rnmajor lakes and 735 small lakes that contain approximatelyrn500 km~2 of water (72% of Indonesia’s total surfacernwater supplies), with three of the twenty deepest lakes inrnthe world (Matano (590 m); Toba (529); Poso (450 m))rnbeing located there.
