Research to identify the best means of detecting mobile phone use by drivers revealed both implementation issues and future potential. Mobile phone ownership and use in New Zealand is likely to increase in the future. It is also likely to change, as phone technologies continue to advance. Driver distraction, as a result of using a mobile phone while driving, is already a concern, and is targeted in the government's Safer Journeys programme. Safer Journeys aims to reduce driver distraction (including phone use) in order to improve the safety of New Zealand roads.ln a project funded by the Transport Agency, Opus Research examined the options for monitoring mobile phone use by drivers while they are driving.
