The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 was certainly a catastrophe. However, a majority of the loss resulted from the cataclysmic fires that followed. Inad- equate water supplies and delivery resulted in much of the city being reduced to ashes. The realization that San Francisco could not be rebuilt without ample and reliable water supplies resulted in the construction of the Hetch Hetchy Water Project. The Hetch Hetchy Project, which included the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, building O'Shaughnessy Dam in the lower Yosemite Valley, and the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, which is a 137-mile gravity-driven network of tunnels, pipes, and dams can deliver almost 4 million gallons per day to the bay area.
