The Erosion Control Blanket was invented in 1963 - by American Excelsior Company (AEC). AEC employees at the plant in Englcwood, CO began experimenting with the use of 24-foot long excelsior cooler pads, with cotton cheese cloth, on Cherry Creek in downtown Denver to help control erosion. They found, however, that the cooler pads were too thick for this purpose. The cooler pad production process was subsequently modified to produce thinner rolls with better netting and the ECB came to life. These modification were eventually refined and implemented at AEC's Wisconsin-based manufacturing facilities. Finally, although only at AEC for a few years, Dick Stamm was credited with much of the early development and general acceptance of ECBs.
