Located within the McKinley Woods Forest Preserve, in Channahon, Illinois, is a new multi-functional complex with open space for recreation, fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking and picnicking, paired with a mission-driven environmental education center called Four Rivers. Uniquely situated on an island connected by an isthmus, the site is bordered by the DuPage River, the Des Plaines River and the historic I & M Canal, some 40 miles southwest of Chicago. Once a private estate called Moose Island, the site was purchased by the Forest Preserve District of Will County in 2005, specifically for the development of a public use area. The Forest Preserve District selected URS Corporation to create a design that would enable visitors to enjoy "a spirit of learning through physical experience in a pure and true nature setting."
